10th Anniversary of the Windermere Airshow
HOW DID IT TURN OUT?

Asked how the Airshow went David Thomas, Airshow Director, said “I was over the moon to see so many people enjoying themselves and to know that about 30 charities attending will reap the benefit, entirely due to support from over 200 sponsors, without whom Rotary could not put it on.”
An estimated 40,000 crowd enjoyed the two day spectacle despite the organisers, The Rotary Club of Windermere, saying that they lost all flying displays on Saturday, due to drizzle and low cloud. The non stop activities and events on the Showground at Bowness kept the crowd entertained on Saturday, with Sunday visitors having a hectic day to see and do everything on the ground as well as enjoying the very full flying programme.
The President of the Club, John Newberry said that “since we ran our first show it has grown bigger and better year on year such that it now needs a professional event management company to take it up further notches. The Members’ of the Rotary Club of Windermere have been giving much thought to the best way that Windermere Airshow can continue into the future. We are aware of the importance of the Airshow to the local community and in particular the tourism industry – in 2009 the Airshow generated at least £4 million for the local economy.
We feel that as a Service Club we have, with the resources at our disposal, taken the Airshow as far as we can and that we now need to pass on the organisation to Bluestone Events , who have worked alongside Rotary to stage the 2010 Airshow.
The rights to the Airshow are being transferred to Bluestone, who are based in Kendal. The Company owns and manages a portfolio of major events, which locally include The Keswick Mountain Festival and the Kendal Food Festival.
John Newberry added, ‘we will still be involved as the nominated charity for future events and we are confident that the Windermere Airshow will go from strength to strength under the stewardship of Bluestone’.
Lucy Bennett, Partner of Bluestone said “We are delighted to have this opportunity and after working closely with the Rotary Club this year we know how important this event is to local businesses, tourism and the local community. Our relationship with the Rotary Club has thrived over the last nine months and we believe that we are well placed to continue the legacy of the event which will remain to benefit the local economy. The Airshow is a fantastic event and we are very proud that it is part of the Bluestone portfolio”
The dates for next year’s Windermere Airshow will be 23rd / 24th July 2011.
On the ground there is something for all the family with the Taylor’s Fun Fair, a ‘food village’ and a host of other exciting displays and interactive entertainment on the Showground.
